Did you know?

According to a study by the Gallop Organization and Consumer Reports, dentists are among the top five most trusted professionals.

What do powdered fruit, talc, honey, dried flowers, mice and lizard livers have in common? They have all been ingredients in ancient toothpaste and powder. Yum.

Attention Chocolate Lovers…Many dentists agree raisins can cause more tooth decay than chocolate. Sticky foods such as raisins and dried fruits can stay on the teeth longer and develop more decay.

According to a study at the University of Connecticut, too much toothpaste early in life is responsible for more than 70% of fluorosis cases (staining or mottling of tooth enamel that develops when children swallow fluoridated toothpaste). Although this problem is only cosmetic, it is recommended children under six only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and be reminded to spit it out after brushing.

Dr. Farley voted Top Cosmetic Dentist in Annapolis

In June 2008, Dr. Farley was voted Top Cosmetic Dentist in Annapolis by a vote of Maryland dental professionals, and will be included in the inaugural list of topDentists.  Because topDentists is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which hundreds of dentists and specialists throughout Maryland cast thousands of "votes" on the abilities of other dentists and specialists, and because listings cannot be purchased (and no payment is required to be listed), inclusion in topDentists is considered a singular honor.

Dr. Farley will be featured in What's Up? Annapolis' October 2008 Top Dentist issue.

Welcome Dr. Kathryn Ehmann!

We would like to welcome the newest addition to our dental team, Dr. Kathryn Ehmann!

She is a graduate of Cornell University and in a somewhat non-traditional path, spent 2 years in the Peace Corps in Senegal (West Africa) before graduating magna cum laude from the University at Buffalo Dental School in upstate New York.  She then spent 3 years in the Navy completing a hospital based general practice residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, then a year on the USS Enterprise, and finally a year at the Naval Branch Dental Clinic in Norfolk, VA.  Although appreciating her military service, Dr. Ehmann is glad to be reunited with her family and excited to join Dr. Farley’s practice.

Dr. Ehmann is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry

Update from the American Heart Association

According to the American Dental Association, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommended that patients with certain heart conditions take antibiotics shortly before dental treatment for decades. This was done with the belief that antibiotics would prevent infective endocarditis (IE), previously referred to as bacterial endocarditis. The AHA’s latest guidelines were published in its scientific journal, Circulation, in April 2007 and there is good news: the AHA recommends that most of these patients no longer need short-term antibiotics as a preventive measure before their dental treatment.

Research Links Oral and Systemic Health

According to the American Dental Association, new research links oral health to your overall health. Researchers have found that periodontitis (the advanced form of gum disease that can cause tooth loss) is associated with other health problems such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and bacterial pneumonia. Likewise, pregnant women who have periodontitis may be at increased risk for delivering pre-term and/or low birth weight babies.

Annual Children’s Dental Day

On Friday, March 9, 2007 we held our 11th Annual Children’s Dental Day. Started in 1997, Children’s Dental Day provides children under the age of twelve, who otherwise would not be able to afford dental care, the opportunity to receive cleanings and exams in our office free of charge.

This event is a wonderful opportunity to change the state of dental health in our community’s children by calling attention to the oral health epidemic. We are so grateful to those who have donated their time, products and efforts into making this a fun and educational event for children!
